HONORING MIAMI'S BAHAMIAN ROOTS -

DR. DAZELLE DEAN SIMPSON

Dr. Dazelle Dean Simpson, the first black pediatrician to be board certified in Florida, left an indelible mark on both the medical profession and society at large during her more than 40 years of practice in Liberty City and Overtown. Born to a family deeply rooted in Coconut Grove's history, Simpson's educational achievements were notable, including graduating as valedictorian from George Washington Carver High School and magna cum laude from Fisk College. She furthered her studies at Meharry Medical College, where she met her husband, George Simpson, himself a pioneering figure in medicine. Overcoming racial and gender barriers, Simpson's career was marked by numerous accolades and achievements, including raising funds for her alma mater and being honored as Alumnus of the Year twice. As a pediatrician, Simpson tirelessly served her community, making house calls and advocating for preventative care. Her commitment to medicine and family, inspired by her grandfather's values, earned her the admiration and gratitude of those she cared for and mentored, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion, dedication, and progress in healthcare.
