John Edwin Culmer’s contributions to Miami were multifaceted and profound. Arriving from the Bahamas at 19, he settled in Coconut Grove, where he became a prominent figure at Christ Episcopal Church and later pursued priesthood despite initial barriers. Culmer’s leadership at St. Agnes’ Church for 34 years transformed it into the largest Episcopal church for Black Americans in the South. Beyond his parish, Culmer advocated for racial equality, helped establish educational and social initiatives, and played pivotal roles in desegregation efforts, shaping Miami’s social fabric. His influence extended nationally and internationally, earning him accolades and recognition as a pioneering humanitarian and religious leader, revered for his commitment to integration and justice.
